'Sugar Shack' Strip Club Comes Down...Making Room For...

Residents of the Cully neighborhood gathered Monday morning to watch the beginning of the end for the Sugar Shack, a shuttered strip club with a sordid past.

Hacienda Community Development Corp., which plans to build a 140-unit affordable apartment project on the site, invited women who lived in the neighborhood to take a sledgehammer to the former strip club before Executive Director Ernesto Fonseca took an excavator to it.

The strip club sat at a high-visibility gateway to the Cully neighborhood, at the corner of Northeast Cully Boulevard and Killingsworth Street. And it had a long history as one node of a prostitution ring operated by the club's owner.
