JUNE 8, 2019 AT SEI (SELF ENHANCEMENT INC

3920 N KERBY AVE – PORTLAND OR 97227

PORTLAND, Ore. (May 27, 2019) – Join Juneteenth OR on June 8 for a royal event you

won’t want to miss.

On Saturday, June 8 from 4:30 p.m. – 7 p.m., Juneteenth Oregon will host their

second annual Miss Juneteenth Oregon Pageant at Self Enhancement, Inc located at

3920 N Kerby Ave, Portland, OR 97227. The evening will be complete with gowns,

talent competition, and on-stage question, but the purpose of the pageant is clear

according to pageant organizer, Octavia Chambers. “This is not pageantry as usual.

For us it is important for each girl to know that the purpose of this program is to

foster sisterhood, build confidence and provide space for black girls to shine as

their true authentic self, whatever that means for each of them.”

This year’s contestants’ range in age from 10 – 17 and are coming from as far as

Eugene to compete. “It is exciting to see the growth we have had since last year.

This is only year 2, so we are still learning and growing. What is different about

this year is that we will be launching our year-long programming, which is super

exciting. Based on feedback we received from the girls from this year and last

year, more space to talk about all the things as it relates to just being a black

girl in America, and specifically in Oregon, is needed and we are more than happy

to provide that space.”

Arya Morman - Miss Black Oregon US Ambassador 2019, Marneet Lewis - Ms Global

United 2018-19, and other special guests will be in attendance. Sierra Boyne - Miss

Juneteenth Oregon 2018, a senior at Westview High School in Beaverton (and soon to

be freshman at Lewis & Clark College) will crown the new Miss Juneteenth Oregon and

present her with a $500 scholarship thanks to sponsor Above The Fray Design.

Awards such as “The Spirit of Juneteenth” and “Miss Clara Peoples Award,” will go

to the other contestants as well and the event will help raise money for the Miss

Juneteenth Oregon educational program and 2020 girls retreat.
