U.S. Attorney for Oregon Billy J. Williams says Governor Kate Brown needs to deploy the National Guard to help Portland Police with demonstrations .

Williams says the damage to the Justice Center and the Hatfield Federal Courthouse is "sickening."

Williams says there needs to be leadership to help the city.

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler says he asked Governor Brown for help from the National Guard, but she declined and said additional Oregon State Police troopers would be more effective.

Multnomah County Sheriff Mike Reese says "It was incredibly violent last night in front of the Justice Center at times."

The crowd shot large fireworks at police along with throwing items. Reese says the police showed incredible restraining.

Mayor Wheeler says that if the guard is deployed they would not be used for crowd control, but would be used to secure buildings which would free up more officers to be used on crowd control.
