About this Event
We’re calling together all who participate in, lead, and support girls’ sports communities for some real talk.
- Opportunities for some girls to play sports have steadily increased over the years, but girls are still twice as likely to drop out of sports by age 14 than boys. Drop-off rates are statistically higher for girls of color and girls from low income households. (Women’s Sports Foundation)
- Coaches have the power to keep girls in the game, but less than 30% of youth sports coaches are women. (Aspen Institute Project Play)
- All girls need role models, but among adults, men are twice as likely to report that they “play sports”. Even for any regular physical exercise, adults with higher incomes are 20% more likely to engage. (Sports and Health In America Study: NPR/Robert Wood Johnson Foundation/Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health)
Join us for a fascinating panel discussion with female athletes that span the generations, featuring athletes ranging from high school to collegiate to professional, to hear about their experiences with sports and why they ultimately stayed in the game. Stay tuned for the announcement of guests, including our featured professional athlete! We’ll also explore sports survey data collected from Portland youth athletes, celebrate your sports stories, and officially introduce Sport Oregon’s new SHE FLIES Initiative. This is a free community event recommended for middle school, high school, and adult audiences.
She flies with her own wings. Let’s help her take flight.
About Us: SHE FLIES is a new Sport Oregon Foundation initiative to support, engage, and celebrate girls and women’s participation in sports across Oregon. At Sport Oregon we believe sport is for all- all body types, all races, all ages, all income levels. Our Oregon state motto is “She Flies With Her Own Wings”, and through SHE FLIES we want to foster safe community spaces where all who identify as girls and women have an opportunity to use sports to take flight into the many positive benefits of sports participation. In 2021 we will introduce several initiative components including a grant program for youth programs engaging girls in sport, a girls and women in sports awards program, and further community events.
