The Skamania County Sheriff's Office has identified a snowboarder who was killed in a fall into the crater of Mt. St. Helens.

On Saturday, 42-year-old Roscoe Shorey, of Washougal, climbed to the rim of the mountain.

He was an experienced climber. It was his 28th trip to the top.

He was on a snow cornice when it broke and he fell 12-hundred feet into the volcano's crater. He was killed in the fall.

A helicopter brought a search and recovery team into the crater and they removed his body.

The Sheriff's Office says snow cornices are difficult to detect and more likely to break away during warmer weather.
