In November 2024, ODOT, Oregon Parks and Recreation Department and project partners celebrated the Mitchell Point Tunnel as part of the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail during a public ribbon-cutting event . The dedication offered an opportunity to preview the Mitchell Point Tunnel before it opened.

Since the dedication ceremony in November 2024, the trail segment remained closed while crews waited for warmer weather to complete construction including final stonework, paving and striping. The Mitchell Point tunnel and an additional 1.5 miles of the Historic Highway State Trail are now open.

As with many popular sites in the Gorge, parking at the Mitchell Point trailhead is very constrained. Consider scheduling your visit early in the day or on a weekday, when visitation is likely to be lower. Please only park in legally designated parking spots.

The new segment of the Historic Highway State Trail is ADA-accessible and open to walkers, bikers and rollers. A vault toilet is available at the trailhead.

At this time, the Mitchell Point tunnel trailhead can be reached by vehicle, walking from Viento State Park, or a combination of biking to Viento and walking to Mitchell Point.
