The history of “stepping” dates back to the 19th Century from South Africa, when black workers in the gold mines were forbidden to speak to one another from their white overseers. As a result, these black workers used stomping or “stepping” as a means to communicate. This practice evolved when historically black organizations used stepping as a way to express their cultural identity.
